What do these abbreviations mean?

You will notice that some of the dogs have an (LH) after their name. This is a system that I have adopted to help future breeders of the Weimaraner and Weimaraner Longhair. (LH) simply means the Weimaraner in question is a Weimaraner longhair. Some people write this as (L). Most people don't even use either. I hope this system will eventually be used by all Weimaraner owners to help distinguish between the two breeds. Others have an LHC (or earlier **) after their name. This simply means that that dog is a known or proven carrier of the longhair gene.

There are only three ways for a dog to be a carrier:

1) One of their parents was a longhair,

2) One or both of their parents was a known carrier and the pup in question has a double coat

3) The dog in question has produced a longhair puppy.

What does having a longhair or longhair gene mean?

Weimaraner Longhairs are now classified in Australia as a separate breed of Weimaraner, however it is still permissable to breed Weimaraners to Weimaraner (Longhairs). In the showring Weimaraner Longhairs are judged separately which means they have a better chance of getting their championship points than when they are judged with the shorthairs as the two breeds look quite different.

If a longhair is bred to another longhair all their pups will be longhair.

If a longhair is bred to a longhair carrier then they will produce 50% longhairs and 50% shorthairs carrying the longhair gene. (This is what we did with Breeze’s litter which is why there are four longhairs and 3 shorthairs all carrying the longhair gene).

If a longhair is bred to a shorthair not carrying the longhair gene then ALL of their pups will be shorthair but all will CARRY the longhair gene. (This is what we did with Sasha’s I litter to bring the longhair gene to an American line which usually never carry longhair genes because longhairs are disqualified in America).

The LHC denotes that the dogs are confirmed longhair carriers. This means they look like a shorthair and are judged in the shorthair class. If they were bred to a dog carrying the longhair gene they would produce 25% longhair, 50% shorthair (but carrying the longhair gene like them) and 25% shorthair pups (in other words three quarters of the pups would appear to be shorthairs (most carriers) and one quarter would be longhairs). If bred to a longhair they would produce 50% longhair pups and 50% shorthair but all carrying the longhair gene.
